How to Build Up Mixed Media Layers in Your Sketchbook (Tour + Demo)
Creating sketchbook backgrounds is oh so fun, but what do you do next? In this video, I want to share how I progress my spreads from simple backgrounds to richly layered mixed-media art. I'll walk you through some recently completed spreads and share practical tips on using concepts like scale, repetition, and contrast to bring your sketchbook pages to life.
Plus, you'll see me continue working on the backgrounds I started in a recent video. I hope you enjoy the video and find some inspiration and encouragement in this relaxed, incremental approach to making art!

Today, I'm excited to share what I've been up to in my newest sketchbook, the 9 x 12 inch Fabriano Venezia. As I flick through the pages, I talk about the benefits of sowing many seeds of inspiration and not worrying if they don't fit into a theme or look like a cohesive style. There is plenty of time for that later, but there's an advantage to delaying that process and lingering in the experim...

I am so sorry for the loss of your pet-as an animal lover I send you my heart felt condolences. I truly understand the loss of a beloved dog. I too use my art as a soul need. My husband has been diagnosed with cognitive decline. I am often isolated in our tiny condo taking are of him, our condo and our rescue dog. Not only am I grieving his many physical and mental changes i am grieving the loss of my beautiful art studio and business. We used to live in rural SW Michigan and was lucky enough to have deigned and built a 750 sq. ft. art studio/gallery. I was a member of the Blue Coast Artists and was a working artist making highly textured handmade papers from the plants I grew in our 2 1/2 acre garden that I designed, planted and managed. I was highly active in the local art community, had an art gallery that sold the work of 25 other artists and had been chosen as the Artist-in-Residence at the Indian Dunes National Lakeshore. It was a magical and creative life. Then my husband was diagnosed and we had to leave that property that we were no longer able to maintain and manage. Space is limited in our condo but I set up a tiny art table in our sunporch and even though some days I can only work there 30 to 60 minutes my sketchbook is always there waiting for me. Obviously I cannot make paper these days but I am teaching myself to use paints and inks for the first time. Your UA-cams are one of my favorite sources. THANK YOU!

We are in the middle of a heat wave here in SW Michigan so spending more time indoors right now. I am catching up on your FB posts etc. I am really enjoying 5-part your series this week. I LOVE your trick of using thin masking tape to make a perfect grid. (I have been measuring to get that look and your trick seems SO much easier.) I have the white set of drawers and love it for pads of papers and sketchbooks. I saw it on one of your earlier videos before you moved your studio. I absolutely love that mirror on wall. probably not IKEA. Looks great. And the antique chest is stunning.

I bought IKEA stuff for my art studio classroom. It is so small I had the think “up”. I have shelving and those same modular wall mounted board systems for each of my centers. Thank you for showing us your space.

Big yes to that! I agree; most things from IKEA are very practical and timeless in design. They scrub up well even after years of use.
